Invitation for Pastors | Film Screening of CHICAGO: America's Hidden War

Dimas Salaberrios recently produced a new film entitled “CHICAGO: America’s Hidden War”.  It is due to release next month.  Dimas felt it was time to spark a movement of both outrage and action over what’s happening in Chicago and other inner cities around the world in order to help crime-ridden areas avoid the shockingly warlike environments that takes place in some Black and Latino urban communities.

Pastor Jeff Warren at Park Cities Baptist Church is hosting a private “Pre-Launch” showing of this film with Dimas, who will be available for a Q&A time following the film.

We hope Dallas area pastors can join us this coming Tuesday - April 27th from 11:30am to 1:30pm in the Great Hall of Park Cities Baptist Church.  Lunch will be provided during the showing of the film.  Parking is available in the underground parking garage.  Park on Level 1 of the garage and take the central elevator lobby to 2nd Floor for the Great Hall.

Your Free Registration can be made using this LINK.

Feel free to check out the Films Trailer at this LINK.

Dallas Museum of Art | KERA Present Remembrances of Toni Morrison

Selected Shorts returns to Arts & Letters Live with a tribute to Toni Morrison, who died in August 2019. Her novels, including Beloved, Jazz, and Song of Solomon, have become an indelible part of the American canon. Her fierce, poetic visions articulated deep truths about racial injustice in America and earned her the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize, a National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was also an editor, an advocate, a teacher, and a mother.

Hosted by award-winning author Yaa Gyasi (Homegoing, Transcendent Kingdom), the event will include Emmy Award–winning actor Joe Morton (Rowan/Eli Pope in Scandal), Tony Award–winning actor Anika Noni Rose (Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere), two-time Obie Award winner Charlayne Woodard (Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Hair), and Brandon J. Dirden (Tony Award–winning production of All the Way).

This not-to-be-missed program features commentary about Morrison’s legacy along with actor readings of “The Dancing Mind” (the speech she delivered upon her acceptance of the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 1996), her short story “Sweetness,” and excerpts from the novels Jazz and Sula.

Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture | MLK Virtual Symposium with Annette Gordon-Reed

THE IMPACT OF SLAVERY ON REV. KING’S ‘DREAM’

THE 2021 MARTIN LUTHER KING, JUNIOR, SYMPOSIUM

Keynote speaker Annette Gordon-Reed is the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for History and one of the most authoritative voices on race and history in America.

January 18, 2021 at 6:30 pm with entertainment beginning at 6:10, virtual event.

Register - https://35468.blackbaudhosting.com/35468/tickets?tab=2&txobjid=762c33d2-f760-4521-a4fc-28e7d323788d

Annette Gordon-Reed is a Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, and the Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School. She is the award-winning author of six books, including The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, which won the Pulitzer Prize in history and the National Book Award for nonfiction—and fourteen other awards. It explores the inconsistencies of Jefferson’s stance on slavery and his relationship with enslaved woman Sally Hemings, and has been called “the best study of a slave family ever written” by noted Jefferson scholar Joseph Ellis.

Gordon-Reed is also the author of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy. It offers a rich examination of scholarly writing on the relationships between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, and exposes the possibility that scholars were misguided by their own biases and may even have contorted evidence to preserve their preexisting opinions of Jefferson. Her most recent book (with Peter S. Onuf) is “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs”: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination, presents a provocative character study of Jefferson, that challenges much of the scholarly status quo on his portrayal throughout history. Gordon-Reed’s upcoming title, A Jefferson Reader on Race, is set to be published in early 2020.

Her honors include the National Humanities Medal (awarded by President Barack Obama), a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a MacArthur Fellowship. Gordon-Reed was also elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is a member of the Academy’s Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2019, she was elected a Member of the American Philosophical Society.

Joining her during a panel later in the event will be Drs. Sharron Wilkins Conrad, Donna McBride, and Kenton Rambsy. View their information here.
